GL7

300mK sorption cooler

Gram per gram, Helium 3 is the world’s most expensive substance. CRC’s gas-light sub-Kelvin sorption coolers have been designed to make the best possible use of this scarce resource. By buffering the ultra-cold stage with either one or two intermediate stages, we reduce the heat load on the ultra-cold head and hence lower the running temperature and lengthen the run time. As our coolers are sealed systems, no helium gas is consumed during operation and our units never need to be recharged or re-filled. Our latest design, the 300mK continuous cooler, even offers unlimited run time.

Standard GL7 — 16L/2L

Overview

The GL7 is a two-stage, single-shot sorption cooler that is designed to interface to a low-power 4K precooler, such as a Gifford-McMahon (GM) cryocooler. It consists of a 1K 4He pre-cooler and a 300mK 3He module. A standard 16L/2L (4He/3He) GL7 will run for 12 hours under 30µW of thermal load on the 3He cold head at a temperature ≤0.33K. This system can be customised to operate with higher loads and have increased run time.

The GL7 has no external gas handling or pumped gas circulation. The sorption cooler only requires electrical connections to the outside of the cryostat. A thermometry box is needed to measure the sensors along with a programable power supply to control the heaters.

Overview

The GL7 is a two-stage, single-shot sorption cooler that is designed to interface to a low-power 4K precooler, such as a Gifford-McMahon (GM) cryocooler. It consists of a 1K 4He pre-cooler and a 300mK 3He module. A ‘large’ 20L/5L (4He/3He) GL7 will run for 24 hours under 50µW of thermal load on the 3He cold head at a temperature ≤0.34K.
